Changing a tyre - step by step guide
The easiest way to change a tyre is to get an expert to do it for you! Our mobile tyre fitting team cover the whole of the North West, from Liverpool and Manchester to Cheshire and Lancashire, so we're ready to help you in as little as 30 minutes. Best of all, we'll fit a proper replacement tyre, rather than the temporary Space Saver tyre your car comes with, so you won't need to replace the tyre again shortly afterwards.
Ready to give changing a tyre a shot yourself? Follow these steps carefully and you will hopefully be on the road before you know it.
- Pull to the roadside as soon as possible at a safe location, and put on your hazard warning lights.
- Pull the handbrake to stop the car from shifting.
- Collect all the essential equipment you need. You will require a jack, a lug wrench, and a spare tyre. This is probably located in your boot, underneath the carpeting. You may also require the vehicle owner's handbook.
- Other useful equipment to have includes a flashlight, gloves, a raincoat, wheel wedges, and a piece of wood to keep the jack in place.
- Wedge the wheels in place using wheel wedges. If you do not have any wedges, then bricks, stones or any other solid object can work in a pinch.
- Take off the hubcap and loosen the wheel nuts with your lug wrench. Don't remove them yet!
- Try to find the jack point by running your hand underneath the car frame. This may feel like a flat piece of metal and should be a different material than the rest of the car frame. If there is any uncertainty, check the vehicle owner's manual, as jacking the car without correctly placing the jack under the jack point could lead to damage or put your safety at risk.
- Use the jack to lift the vehicle. You may find it helpful to put a flat piece of wood underneath the jack to prevent it from shifting. Place the jack underneath the jack point and raise the car until it is 15cm / half a foot off the ground. Do not put any part of your body underneath the vehicle when it has been raised by the jack - doing so is exceptionally dangerous.
- When the car is raised, you can remove the rest of the lug nuts.
- Gently pull the tyre away from the hub and lay it flat on the ground.
- You can now attach the spare tyre. Line up the rim of the tyre with the lug bolts, and push the tyre into place.
- Tighten the lug nuts by hand.
- Lower the car using the jack.
- Tighten the lug nuts using the wrench so they are on as firmly as possible.
- Put the hubcap back on, if possible.
- Pack all your equipment away.
- Check the tyre pressure to make sure it corresponds with what is printed on the tyre.
- Drive to a tyre bay as soon as possible, as your tyre will not be safe to use over long distances or at high speeds.
