How To Remove a Car Wheel

Removing a car wheel is a fantastic skill that all drivers should know how to do, and it's a simple way to solve any punctures, flat tyres, or other issues while out on the road or stuck at home.

We've put together a simple step by step guide to removing your car wheel, making sure you can get back on the road in no time at all.

1. Prepare to remove the car wheel

Preparation is everything. If you get a flat tyre on the middle of a busy road, you are bound to be in a bit of a panic. Get in a calm frame of mind and remember that you can do this!

You need to prepare the car too, so make sure to put on the handbrake and get everyone safely out of the vehicle. Gather any equipment you might need, such as a wrench, a jack, and wheel chocks.

If you don't have wheel chocks, find a similar stabilising object such as a large brick or stone.

2. Put the wheel chocks or bricks in place

Next, you need to put the chocks or bricks in place to stabilise your car. Put the chocks on the opposite wheel to the one that is flat.

For instance, if your right-front tyre is flat, put a chock behind the left-rear wheel.

3. Jack the car

You need to choose your specific jacking point, and try to aim the jack close to the punctured wheel. Once the jack is in place, gently raise the car up and get ready to remove and replace your tyre.

4. Remove the wheel nuts

The first step to removing the car wheel is to remove the wheel nuts using a wrench. Start slowly and gently ease the wheel nuts out of your existing wheel.

Carefully pull the tyre towards you and place it on the ground.

5. Put in the replacement wheel

Next, you need to replace the wheel so you can get back on the road. Remember, tyres can be very heavy, so make sure you lift from your back and take your time. If you're with someone else, let them help you put the wheel in place.

Please note that, if you're using a spare wheel, you can't exceed 50mph and can only drive a short distance. These wheels are intended to get you to a safe place for a tyre repair - even just to get you off the motorway so you can wait in comfort for a mobile tyre fitter - and aren't for normal use.

Then, it's just a case of using the wrench to tighten the wheel nuts.

6. Final checks

You have now safely removed and replaced your car wheel. Lower your car back down and double-check the wheel nuts. Make sure they are nice and tight before getting back behind the wheel.
