How to repair a puncture on a car tyre yourself

In the past, cars and vans would come with a spare tyre, but nowadays in an effort to reduce the weight of cars and prevent emissions, many vehicles come with a puncture repair kit instead. These can be used to plug minor punctures, although it is still advisable to get experts to come out to perform a professional tyre repair or replacement.

Pull into a safe location

You will want to pull over as soon as possible - the longer you drive on a flat tyre, the more damage you will cause to the tyre, the wheel itself, and your car. Driving on a flat tyre is also dangerous. You will want to get yourself and your passengers out of the car.

Get your puncture repair kit ready

Your puncture repair kit is likely located in the boot of your car. Take out your puncture sealant and the compressed gas.

Find the puncture

Take a look at your car tyre and see if you can spot the puncture. If it's in the tyre sidewall or is over around 4mm in size, it's unlikely that you'll be able to repair it with a puncture repair kit, and you'll need a replacement tyre. This is also the case if the wheel is damaged.

If you notice that anything is stuck in your tyre, it is best to leave it in for the time being. Removing objects such as nails may exacerbate the problem.

Read any instructions on the tyre repair kit

Obviously, any information you read on this page will not override the usage information on the tyre repair kit!

However, usually, you will

  • Remove the valve from the tyre
  • Squeeze the sealant into the tyre
  • Plug the tyre compressor into your car's cigarette lighter port
  • Inflate the tyre to the correct tyre pressure, as shown in the manufacturer's handbook.

  • The car is now safe to drive - but only to your local tyre fitters!

    Get the tyre replaced

Manual puncture repairs are only a temporary measure. Your car should not be driven over a certain speed or a particular distance - this should be printed on the puncture repair kit.

If you're not able to repair your tyre - perhaps you don't have a tyre repair kit, or you're far away from a tyre garage - then speak with the team at YourNewTyres! We will come to your location wherever you are in the North West to get your car back on the road, with a brand-new tyre!
