Puncture repairs - legal requirements

It's important to use a reputable company like YourNewTyres when you're looking for a puncture repair.

All tyres must be repaired to British Standard regulations BS AU159, which lays out specific standards and rules for all tyre repairs, including van and car tyres. These regulations say what damage can be fixed, and how these tyre repairs should be undertaken. For example, when fixing punctures, the vehicle's tyre ought to be taken off the wheel so any internal damage can be identified and repaired. If this is not done, and internal damage to the tyre remains, sudden tyre failure could occur, which would put the occupants of the car at risk.

Spare wheel or tyre sealants?

Does your car have a spare wheel, or does it instead include a tyre inflation pack and some tyre sealant? If your vehicle carries tyre sealant, this may be a suitable way to fix smaller punctures. Simply open the tyre valve, and inject the sealant and the compressed air into the tyre. The compressed air will then send the sealant into the puncture and fill it. You may need to reinflate your tyre to the correct pressure. However, a tyre sealant is not a foolproof fix for puncture repairs. The results you see will depend on factors such as what caused the puncture, how severe it is, and even how quickly you managed to pull over and start repairing it.

Sealant to prevent punctures

There is also another kind of puncture repair sealant that is to be used before your car gets a puncture, rather than afterwards. These are often called puncture prevention tyre sealants.

Pre-puncture sealants

Pre-puncture sealants are intended to be injected in through the tyre valve in advance and remain in the tyre valve until a puncture occurs. This makes your tyre similar to a run-flat tyre - in the event of a minor puncture, you can continue driving, as the puncture will be repaired almost immediately and without any additional work from you. Unfortunately, pre-puncture sealants are not a foolproof solution. For example, if a large object such as a nail is embedded into your tyre, this will continue causing more damage over time, and will eventually lead to a catastrophic failure. You may be unaware that your car has a puncture until the tyre breaks completely.

However, this does raise concerns that you'll have no idea whether there's been a puncture or not. A large screw or nail in the tread will cause further damage over time and could lead to more catastrophic failure.

Therefore, we recommend that, if you are using a pre-puncture sealant, you should examine your tyres for punctures every time you use the vehicle. You may be able to spot that the sealant has been activated by the presence of a discoloured spot on the outside of the tyre - usually white, as the sealant typically uses a white latex formula.

If you spot that the sealant has been activated, or if you see any object penetrating or damaging your tyre, you will need to remove the tyre from the wheel rim and fully inspect it to see if it requires a professional repair.

Post-puncture sealants

These are used following a puncture. You inject the sealant through the valve and then use the compressor or cylinder of compressed gas to re-inflate. A can of sealant can bring peace of mind, but it’s important that you spot the puncture early and stop quickly. Our North West mobile tyre fitters will be able to advise if a puncture repair is sensible and possible, and if it is, we can use our post-puncture sealants to bring the car back into a roadworthy condition quickly.

Run-flat technology

Although, in theory, it’s possible to fix a puncture on a run-flat tyre, its not advisable. With this type of tyre if it has been driven on after a puncture it will weaken the wide wall after use. We can repair run-flat tyres but we ask you to sign a disclaimer to show you are aware that we advise you to change the tyre. Our mobile vehicle mechanics don't just carry puncture repair kits with them - we can also bring you the tyre you need, too! You can rest assured that we can get the puncture fixed and get you moving again, regardless of whether a sealant is required or if the whole tyre needs replacing. Your safety is our main priority, so we pride ourselves on delivering a cost-effective and proficient service. As such we would always advise you to purchase a new run-flat tyre rather than repairing it.

If we can be of assistance to you we offer our services across the whole of the North West. Call the team today and let us get you moving again!
