Buying new tyres for your vehicle is not something anyone looks forward to. However, as the only contact point between the car and the road, they are arguably the most important component of a vehicle. Ultimately it is very important you choose the right tyres for your vehicle.

What do I need to know before buying tyres?

Before you can buy new car tyres, you need to know the size of the tyre fitted to your car. This is printed on the outside edge of the tyre, in raised lettering. It’s sometimes small and hard to find at a glance, but it will be printed somewhere on the sidewall of the tyre.

What do the numbers on my tyres mean? How tyre sizing works

205 – the width of the tyre in millimetres.

45 – the tyre's aspect ratio, or the ratio between the tyre's width and its height.

R – simply tells you what sort of tyre it is.

17 – the diameter of the tyre, in inches this time

The tyre speed rating also important, but often overlooked due to generally the average motorist not expecting their vehicle to do a rally course on the weekend. However, If you choose a tyre with the wrong speed rating you could invalidate your car insurance. It is a vital single letter to understand.

What to think about after you have bought your tyres

After you have invested in the right tyres it is just as important that you ensure they are well maintained and kept in the correct state. Proper inflation can not only prolong the life span of your tyre but also save you fuel and give you better grip and braking.
