Repair a Flat Tyre - Quick Steps
Pull to the roadside at a safe location
You want to pull over as quickly as possible, as driving on a flat tyre can damage your wheel and other components of your vehicle. However, your safety is more important than your wheel, so it is best to continue driving until you find a safe place to pull over.
Put on the handbrake, and remove all passengers from the car.
Make yourself as visible as possible
You should put on your hazard warning lights. If you've got a warning triangle, then set this up to alert oncoming drivers of the obstruction in the road. You may also want to put on a high-vis jacket.
Examine the flat tyre
Try to find the location of the puncture. If there is a tear in the sidewall of the tyre, or a hole larger than 4mm, you will be unable to repair the puncture and may need to instead fit a spare tyre.
If there is damage to the wheel rim itself, you will not be able to fit the spare tyre, either, and will require a breakdown and recovery service. Call us on 07494 112950 for emergency roadside assistance.
If you spot any debris in the tyre, such as a screw or nail, do not touch it or attempt to remove it. The debris may be plugging the puncture and removing it could worsen the problem.
Get your puncture repair kit
You may have a puncture repair kit in the boot. Take this out and follow the instructions printed on the exterior.
Typically, you will want to squeeze the sealant into your tyre through the tyre valve, and then use the compressor to push the sealant throughout the tyre.
You may want to look at our page on how to repair a puncture.
Inflate the tyre to the recommended PSI
If you're not sure how to do so, check out our how-to page on checking your tyre pressure.
Get your tyre replaced as soon as possible
Your damaged tyre will need to be replaced, as it is not safe to drive on the tyre for a long period of time. Check the tyre repair kit to see if it advises you to keep under a certain speed.
