What are Run Flat Tyres?

Our mobile tyre fitters may be able to provide you with run-flat tyres! Visit our contact us page for more information.

Run flat tyres only come with certain models of cars, so if your car comes with a spare tyre in the boot, your car is more than likely not fitted with run flat tyres. Car brands such as Mini, BMW, Mercedes are more likely to be fitted with run flat tyres but they may be in the manual as original equipment. These run flat tyres look very similar to normal tyres, so it may be hard for non-professionals to tell the difference.

If you have run-flat tyres, they will have specially reinforced sidewalls, which means that if you get a puncture whilst driving, you will be able to carry on driving for a limited time before getting a puncture repair. Whilst driving on the run flat tyres after a puncture has occurred, you will only be able to drive at a maximum speed of 50 miles per her (mph) for a maximum of 50 miles. By sticking to this limit, driving should not damage the wheel and you will be able to just get a new tyre rather than any larger repair work.

How do run-flat tyres work?

With the reinforced sidewalls, these tyres can keep your car under control when you get a puncture. A normal tyre would not do this, and would instead likely rapidly deflate, creating a serious safety hazard. A normal tyre goes flat straight away, so you would not be able to drive on it. With a run flat tyre, you will be able to drive further and reach a safe place to stop. This is good when you are driving through a busy area or when you feel it is unsafe to pull over. This then leads us onto the other positive of having run flat tyres - you (or our mobile tyre fitters) then don’t have to change a tyre at the side of the road, which can be extremely dangerous.

If the car is fitted with run flat tyres then the suspension is set to a much softer level. Therefore, you should only put run flat tyres on cars that are specifically made for them. This is because a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System has to be used on the car to alert you when you have a puncture, because you won’t be able to know any other way.

Important information to know about run-flat tyres

Without the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, you would not know you have a puncture, as you can continue to drive on run-flat tyres and may not notice that anything is wrong with your cars. You must be careful not to drive on them for longer than the 50 mile limit. If the wheel is damaged, the cost involve in repairing it will be a lot more than just getting a tyre replaced!
